Board of Governors
The Board of Governors is collectively responsible for the proper governance of the School in accordance with the provisions of the Education Act 1996. The Board directs the affairs of the School by defining the School’s vision, mission, ethos, and values; setting goals and developing policies; and monitoring and evaluating the progress of the School. Each member of the Board contributes to robust discussions on the strategic direction and priorities of the School to promote the best interests of Mutiara’s students.
Liza Chan Sow Keng
Chairperson, Board of Governors
Liza Chan is a graduate from the University of Wales, Institute of Science and Technology Cardiff, with L.L.B (Hons.). Actively in practice as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya, her main areas of counsel are commercial, company, arbitration and family law. Liza has been sitting as a discipline committee member of the Advocate and Solicitors Disciplinary Board and is one of the trainers in the Advocacy Training Course organized by the Bar Council’s Professional Standards and Development Committee to improve advocacy standards. She is the principal of her firm Messrs Liza Chan & Co.
Puan Sri Dr. Kalsom Ismail
Dr. Kalsom Ismail is a graduate from the University of Malaya with a Bachelor in Dental Surgery and received her Master in Science from the University of London. Her academic career evolved through her practicing, lecturing dentistry as well as, researching and presenting a conference paper in Hong Kong. She has been invited to be an external examiner at the University of Singapore. Dr. Kalsom also dedicated time on a sabbatical study at Loma Linda University in the United States on Implantology and Material Science. Her passion for education was the driving force behind the establishment of Mutiara International Grammar School on 8th January 1997. She presides as Executive Chairman of the School. Education and welfare of others remain close to her heart.
Dato’ Sakinah Sulaiman
Sakinah Sulaiman graduated with an MBA from the University of Surrey, UK. She began her career with Esako Travel and Shipping Company, dealing mainly with government agencies. Realizing that education remains her core interest, Sakinah embarked upon making her mark in the education industry by helping to set up Mutiara International Grammar School in 1997. Sakinah plays an active role in the school’s day-to-day operations until the present day.
Balwant Singh is a qualified teacher from the Malayan Teachers’ Training College, Kirkby, Liverpool, England. He has 31 years of experience teaching at various government schools in Malaysia and obtained a Diploma in TESL from the University of Malaya while in service. He was also appointed as the Co-Chief Examiner and Examiner for English for two major Malaysian secondary school examinations–PMR and SPM. Balwant joined MIGS in 1997 and served the School for 16 years, teaching in both Junior and Senior School before retiring as Deputy Head of Senior School in 2013.
Datin Dr Raja Mazuin Raja Abdul Aziz
YM Datin Dr Hjh Raja Mazuin Bt. Raja Abd. Aziz is a veteran in the education sector, having been with the Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE) for many years. She has held multiple posts at the MOE throughout her tenure which has led to a holistic knowledge of curriculum and educational instruction.
Datin Dr Raja Mazuin is currently Head of Quality Management and Integrity Unit at the Institute of Teacher Education Malaysia, International Languages Campus, Kuala Lumpur. She has served professionally as a senior lecturer, master trainer, and consultant.
At the national level, Datin Dr. Raja Mazuin was involved in the National Transformation Programme for teacher education in Malaysia and also the Malaysia Technical Corporation Programme (MTCP) as she has vast experience in planning, implementing, coordinating and managing national and international Teacher Education and Professional Training programmes. She is currently involved in setting up the Masters programme for teacher education in Malaysia.
Datin Dr Raja Mazuin is also actively involved in Malaysian English Language Teaching Association (MELTA) where she has held various positions, from being a committee member in the Training Bureau to Treasurer, Honorary Secretary and now as the Vice-President II. She was also a member of the English Language Quality and Standards Council Malaysia and is currently a memebr of the Board of Governors at MIGS.
As Managing Director of RITE Education Sdn Bhd and RITE International Inc, Elmarie Potgieter has led several international educational transformation and capacity building projects in Malaysia, United Emirates, South Africa, Tanzania, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, and Indonesia. In April 2019 Elmarie was one of the recipients of the Women Leadership Award by CMO Asia and the World Women Leadership Congress. She was also awarded ” Distinguished Fellow ” by Cambridge Global Learning UK in March 2019, and January 2018 the ” Malaysian Women Icon ” award for her work in education transformation. She is a well – known consultant with organizations such as PEMANDU, PADU, AIM and the Ministry of Education Malaysia. Elmarie currently leads the development of the Genovasi Project which was commissioned by the Agensi Innovasi Malaysia and the Genovasi Foundation. Elmarie holds a BA Hons and HED from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She is a Six Seconds Accredited Emotional Intelligence coach and a Kagan Institute Scholarship Winner.
Kith’s first degree is a Bachelor of Business from Queensland University of Technology, Australia. Following which, he obtained an Exec. Dip. in Project Management from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He also holds a Bachelor of Law from the University of London. He is an entrepreneur involved in the building, F&B and hospitality industries. Kith has vast experience in procuring and operating businesses under the franchise model. As parent Governor, he would like to contribute his knowledge and experience as an entrepreneur to grow the school from strength to strength, at the same time, ensuring the best education for the children. His hobbies include golfing and swimming.
